# CSV to QIF converter

Upload the CSV your bank exported and download a .qif file: one block per transaction with the date, the payee and one signed amount. The date, description and amount columns are found by their headers — or by what they contain when there is no header row — so there is nothing to map, and each CSV counts as one page: the first 3 files of your first upload are free.

## What the QIF file contains

- A !Type:Bank header, then one block per row of the CSV, in the same order
- D for the date, written MM/DD/YYYY — the order Quicken writes and GnuCash and Moneydance read
- P for the payee: the CSV’s description columns joined into one line
- T for the amount, signed: money out negative, money in positive — Debit and Credit columns become one
- No categories, so nothing lands in a category you did not choose

## How CSV columns become QIF lines

QIF is plain text: each line starts with one letter that says what it holds, and `^` closes a transaction. This is where each column of your bank’s CSV goes.

| Your CSV column | QIF line | What happens to it |
|---|---|---|
| Date, Transaction Date, Posting Date, Booking Date | `D` | Written MM/DD/YYYY. Whether the CSV’s 03/04 is March or April is decided once for the whole file, from the dates that can only be read one way. |
| Amount, or Debit / Credit, Withdrawal / Deposit | `T` | One signed amount. A decimal comma (3,50) and a currency symbol are read correctly. |
| Description, Payee, Merchant, Details, Memo | `P` | Several description columns are joined into one payee line. |
| Balance, Running Balance | — | QIF has no balance field, so it is left out. |
| Currency | — | QIF has no currency field either: the transactions take the currency of the account you import into. |

```
A typical bank CSV with separate Debit and Credit columns. Uploaded here, it becomes the .qif file shown below.
## Where the QIF file imports
- **GnuCash** — File › Import › Import QIF. GnuCash asks which account the file belongs to, and asks for the date order if a file leaves it open.
- **Moneydance, Banktivity, KMyMoney** — Each has a QIF import in its File menu and asks for the target account.
- **Quicken for Windows** — File › File Import › QIF File works for cash, asset and liability accounts only — Quicken does not import QIF into checking, savings or credit card accounts. For those, choose Quicken in the format menu instead: see [bank statement to Quicken](https://statementconverterai.com/bank-statement-to-quicken).
## How to convert
1. **Export the CSV from your bank** — Most banks offer CSV next to the PDF statement, under statements, activity or export.
2. **Upload it here** — Drop the .csv in above — QIF is already the selected output. Several CSVs can go in at once.
3. **Import the QIF** — Open your finance app’s QIF import, pick the file and the account it belongs to.
## Frequently asked questions
### How do I convert a CSV file to QIF?
Upload the CSV above, keep QIF as the output and download the .qif file. The columns are detected for you, so there is nothing to map, and no account is needed.
### Is there a free CSV to QIF converter?
Each CSV file counts as one page, and the first 3 pages of your first upload are free — three CSV files convert at no cost. After that it is $0.20 a file with a $3.90 minimum per batch, and no subscription.
### Can I import the QIF file into Quicken?
Quicken for Windows imports QIF into cash, asset and liability accounts, not into checking, savings or credit card accounts. For a bank or card account, upload the same CSV and choose Quicken in the format menu: Quicken’s own CSV import takes that file. Details on [bank statement to Quicken](https://statementconverterai.com/bank-statement-to-quicken).
### Which date format does the QIF use?
MM/DD/YYYY, for example 03/04/2026 for 4 March. It is the order Quicken writes; GnuCash asks you to confirm the order when every date in a file could be read both ways.
### Does the QIF keep the balance and the currency?
No — QIF has no field for either. The transactions take the currency of the account you import them into. Convert to [OFX](https://statementconverterai.com/csv-to-ofx) if your app should see the currency in the file.
### Will my bank’s CSV work?
Column order and header names differ from bank to bank. The columns are found from their headers in several languages, or from their contents when there is no header, and semicolon, tab and pipe separators work too. A file with more than 100,000 rows has to be split first.
### Is my file kept after conversion?
No. The file is deleted when the conversion finishes; only the converted copy stays at your private link.
