# QFX to QBO converter

Upload a .qfx file from your bank or from Quicken and download a .qbo that QuickBooks Online imports through Upload from file. QFX and QBO are both OFX underneath, so every transaction carries across as it was — date, payee, memo and signed amount — and a credit card file stays a credit card account.

## What the QBO file contains

- Every transaction in the QFX, in the same order
- The signed amount as the QFX wrote it: money out negative, money in positive
- Payee and memo joined into one description, so nothing is lost
- A bank account or a credit card account, matching the source file
- The currency from the QFX’s <CURDEF>

## QFX and QBO: the same format with a different label

QFX is Intuit’s Quicken flavour of OFX and QBO is its QuickBooks flavour. The transaction blocks inside are the same `<STMTTRN>` records; what differs is the header and the bank tags each program checks. That is why a converter can move the transactions across exactly, with nothing re-read or retyped.

Renaming a .qfx to .qbo leaves the Quicken header and the original bank’s tags in place, and whether QuickBooks accepts the result depends on the bank that wrote it. Converting writes a fresh QBO file that holds only the transactions, in the layout QuickBooks Online’s upload reads.

| | QFX | QBO |
|---|---|---|
| Made for | Quicken | QuickBooks Online and Desktop |
| Underneath | OFX (SGML or XML) | OFX (SGML or XML) |
| Transaction records | `<STMTTRN>` blocks | The same `<STMTTRN>` blocks |
| Duplicate protection | `<FITID>` per transaction | `<FITID>` per transaction |
| Opens in | Quicken, and most finance apps that read OFX | QuickBooks |

## How to convert

1. **Upload the QFX file** — Drop in the .qfx your bank or Quicken produced. An .ofx file works the same way.
2. **Keep QBO selected** — QuickBooks is already the selected output on this page.
3. **Import into QuickBooks Online** — Bank transactions › Upload from file, pick the .qbo and the account, then review the lines in For review.

## Frequently asked questions

### How do I convert QFX to QBO?

Upload the .qfx above, keep QBO selected and download the .qbo file. No account and nothing to install.

### Is there a free QFX to QBO converter?

Each QFX file counts as one page, and the first 3 pages of your first upload are free — so up to three files convert at no cost. After that it is $0.20 a file with a $3.90 minimum per batch, and no subscription.

### Can I just rename a .qfx file to .qbo?

Sometimes it imports and often it does not: the Quicken header and the bank’s tags stay in the file. Converting writes a clean .qbo with only the transactions, which is the reliable route.

### Does QuickBooks Online import QFX files?

Intuit lists .csv, .txt, .qbo and .ofx for a manual upload to QuickBooks Online, and suggests QBO. Converting the QFX to QBO puts it in the format Intuit recommends.

### Will it work in QuickBooks Desktop?

Do not count on it. Desktop reads a .qbo as a Web Connect download and checks which bank it came from; a converted file has no bank behind it. For Desktop, see [QuickBooks Online vs Desktop](https://statementconverterai.com/bank-statement-to-quickbooks).

### What about QIF files?

QIF is a different, older format. Use [QIF to QBO](https://statementconverterai.com/qif-to-qbo) for a .qif file.

### Is my file kept after conversion?

No. The file is deleted when the conversion finishes; only the converted copy stays at your private link.
