Adobe Acrobat alternatives for bank statements
Adobe Acrobat exports a PDF to Excel by copying the page layout, which is fine for a report but leaves a bank statement with headers, wrapped descriptions and balance lines to clean up, and it cannot write QuickBooks, Quicken or Xero files. The main alternative for statements is Statement Converter AI: one row per transaction in Excel, CSV, QBO, QIF or OFX, scans included, with the first 3 pages free and then $0.20 a page — no subscription. Free alternatives are Excel’s Power Query From PDF and Tabula.

Layout export versus reading transactions
Acrobat’s PDF-to-Excel export, in Adobe’s words, transfers "your PDF tables and other content into Excel rows and columns". For a statement that means the bank’s logo block, the account summary, every page header and each wrapped description line come across as rows too. A statement converter reads the document as a statement: it keeps only the transactions, joins wrapped descriptions, and turns debit and credit columns into signed amounts — the shape QuickBooks, Xero and Quicken import.
The alternatives, one by one
1. Statement Converter AI
Reads the transactions rather than the page layout: one row per transaction with the date, description and amount in their own columns, across every page and for scanned or photographed statements too. It writes Excel and CSV, plus QBO for QuickBooks, QIF and QFX for Quicken, OFX, Tally XML, MT940 and budgeting-app CSVs. No subscription: the first 3 pages are free, then $0.20 a page with a $3.90 minimum.
Pick it when the PDF is a bank or credit card statement and you want the transactions, not a copy of the page.
Convert a statement2. Excel Power Query (From PDF)
Already in Excel: Get Data → From File → From PDF loads the tables of a text-based PDF into a query you can clean and refresh. It does not read scans.
Pick it if you have Excel, the PDF has a text layer, and the layout repeats every month.
Microsoft’s PDF connector docs3. Tabula
Free, open-source desktop software that extracts a table you select from a text-based PDF into CSV.
Pick it for a free one-off table when you do not mind tidying the columns.

What you get in Excel
From Acrobat
A workbook that mirrors the PDF: the bank’s header and account summary, page headers repeated through the sheet, descriptions that wrapped onto two lines split across two rows, and debit, credit and balance in whichever columns the layout put them. Good for reading; it needs cleaning before it can be filtered, totalled or imported.
From Statement Converter AI
One sheet with one row per transaction — date, description, amount — across every page of every statement in the batch, ready to sort, total or paste into your books. The same transactions can be downloaded as CSV, QBO, QIF, OFX, Tally XML, MT940 or a Quicken, YNAB, Monarch, Actual or Copilot import file.
Frequently asked questions
How to convert a bank statement to Excel?
Upload the PDF to Statement Converter AI, choose Excel and download the .xlsx: one row per transaction, with date, description and amount columns — the first 3 pages are free. In Adobe Acrobat you export the PDF to Excel, which keeps the page layout, so headers, wrapped descriptions and balance lines usually need cleaning afterwards.
Convert scanned bank statement PDF to Excel?
Statement Converter AI reads scanned and photographed statements as images and returns an Excel file of transactions. In Acrobat, scans need Acrobat Pro ($19.99/month on an annual plan) to recognise the text before exporting to Excel.
Convert bank statement PDF to QIF for Quicken?
Adobe Acrobat cannot export QIF. Upload the PDF to Statement Converter AI, choose Quicken in the format menu and import the CSV through Quicken’s File Import › Banking Transactions; QIF is there too for the accounts Quicken takes it into.
Is Adobe’s online PDF to Excel converter free?
Adobe offers a free online PDF-to-Excel tool at adobe.com; you sign in to save or share the result there. The desktop app needs an Acrobat Standard ($14.99/month) or Pro ($19.99/month) subscription on an annual plan.
Is Statement Converter AI cheaper than Acrobat?
For a few statements, yes: a 20-page statement costs the $3.90 minimum on a first upload, where 3 pages are free, against $19.99 a month for Acrobat Pro on an annual plan. If you already use Acrobat for other PDF work, its export costs you nothing extra.
Can I get a QuickBooks or Quicken file from Acrobat?
No — Acrobat exports to Excel, Word, PowerPoint and similar document formats. Statement Converter AI writes QBO for QuickBooks, a Quicken import CSV and QIF for Quicken, and OFX or CSV for Xero.
