Import a bank statement into Tally

TallyPrime brings transactions in as XML, one voucher line per transaction. Convert the statement to Tally XML, import it, then review the vouchers before they are posted to ledgers.

The four steps

  1. Download the statement

    A PDF or CSV statement from the bank account you are reconciling.

  2. Convert it to Tally XML

    TallyPrime imports XML; the converter produces it from the statement.

  3. Import the XML in TallyPrime

    Use the import option for XML and point it at the downloaded file.

  4. Check the vouchers before posting

    Tally lists what it is about to create — review the ledger names it picked.

XML in, or an export out

There are two directions people mean by “Tally import”. One is bringing outside transactions into Tally, which is what an XML file does. The other is exporting Tally data out for another system.

This page is the first case. The Tally converterturns a statement into one voucher line per transaction, with the narration and amount kept as the bank printed them.

What to check before posting

  • Ledger names. A bank statement prints a description, not a Tally ledger. Check what Tally matched each line to before accepting the batch.
  • Debit and credit sides. A statement shows money in and out from the bank’s point of view, which is the opposite side from your books. Confirm the direction on the first few vouchers.
  • The date format. Day-first and month-first statements both exist, and Tally will accept either without warning if the setting matches.

Frequently asked questions

What format does TallyPrime import?

XML. TallyPrime imports transactions from an XML file, which is what the Tally converter produces.

What is TDL then?

TDL (Tally Definition Language) is how Tally itself is customised — reports, screens, behaviour. It is not an import format, so nothing TDL-specific is produced here.

Will the ledgers be created for me?

The file carries the transactions; which ledger each line is posted to is decided in Tally, and Tally will tell you if a ledger it needs does not exist.

Does this work with older Tally versions?

XML import has been in Tally for a long time, but the exact import path differs between versions. TallyPrime is what this is written against.

Is my statement kept?

No. The file is used only to produce the converted copy and is deleted right after.
