What is a QBO file? QuickBooks Web Connect explained
A QBO file (.qbo) is a QuickBooks Web Connect file: a bank or credit card download that QuickBooks imports as transactions. Inside it is an OFX file — date, amount, description and a unique ID for every transaction — with Intuit’s bank ID tag added. “QBO” is also the common short name for QuickBooks Online itself, which is the program that most often imports these files.
QBO file example
A .qbo file is plain text in OFX format. In a bank’s download, the tag that ties it to QuickBooks is<INTU.BID>, Intuit’s ID for the bank. QuickBooks Desktop needs it; QuickBooks Online’s upload reads the transactions without it.

</OFX>What a QBO file holds
| Tag | What it holds |
|---|---|
| <INTU.BID> | Intuit’s bank ID. QuickBooks Desktop checks it against the banks that support Web Connect. |
| <CURDEF> | The account currency. |
| <BANKACCTFROM> | Routing number, account number and type; <CCACCTFROM> for a credit card. |
| <STMTTRN> | One transaction: type, date posted, signed amount, ID, payee and memo. |
| <FITID> | The transaction’s unique ID. QuickBooks uses it to skip lines already imported. |
| <LEDGERBAL> | The balance on the statement date. |
How QuickBooks imports a QBO file
- QuickBooks Online
- Bank transactions › Upload from file (Upload transactions if the account has no bank connection), choose the .qbo and the account, then add or match the lines in For review. Intuit lists .csv, .txt, .qbo and .ofx for this upload, recommends QBO, and caps a file at 350 KB and 1,000 lines. Step by step:importing a bank statement into QuickBooks.
- QuickBooks Desktop
- File › Utilities › Import › Web Connect Files, or double-click the file. Desktop checks the bank ID and refuses a file it cannot verify (“unable to verify the Financial Institution information”). For transactions from other sources Desktop has its own text format, IIF, and spreadsheet imports.
Opening, creating and converting QBO files
- QBO to CSV or Excel — read a .qbo without QuickBooks, or check it before an upload.
- PDF bank statement to QBO — when the bank gives you only PDFs or paper.
- CSV to QBO — a bank CSV export that QuickBooks will not map.
- QFX to QBO and QIF to QBO — Quicken files into QuickBooks Online.
QBO next to QIF and OFX: QIF vs OFX vs QBO.
Frequently asked questions
What does QBO mean?
Two things. QBO is the usual short name for QuickBooks Online, Intuit’s accounting software. A .qbo file is a QuickBooks Web Connect file: a bank or credit card download that QuickBooks imports as transactions.
What is a QBO file?
A .qbo file is an OFX file of bank or card transactions with Intuit’s bank ID tag, made for QuickBooks. It holds each transaction’s date, amount, description and a unique ID, plus the account and balance. It is not a company file or backup.
How do I open a QBO file?
Import it into QuickBooks. To read it without QuickBooks, convert it to CSV or Excel; in a text editor it shows raw tags.
Can I open a QBO file in Excel?
Not as a table — Excel shows the tags one per line. Convert it with QBO to CSV and pick CSV or Excel.
Is a .qbo file the same as a QuickBooks company file?
No. QuickBooks Desktop keeps a company in a .qbw file, with .qbb for backups and .qbm for portable copies. A .qbo holds only bank transactions to import.
How do I create a QBO file?
From a PDF statement, use bank statement to QBO; from a bank CSV, CSV to QBO; from a Quicken file, QFX to QBO or QIF to QBO. Each file counts as one page, and the first 3 pages of your first upload are free.
Does a converted QBO file work in QuickBooks Desktop?
Do not count on it. Desktop imports a .qbo as a Web Connect download and checks the bank ID against the banks it supports; a file made from a PDF has no bank behind it. It is the right file for QuickBooks Online.
